5 Stories From The Bible About Joy

Here are 5 great stories from the Bible about joy.

Sorrow to Joy – John 16

The disciples were saddened that Jesus was about to go away.  They believed that their sorrow would overwhelm them, but Jesus reassured them that “you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you” (John 16:22).  The joy Jesus gives is permanent, unlike the joy found in the world, so our sorrows of today will be turned into joy when we see Jesus for the very first time.

Filled with Joy – Romans 15

When we are filled with sorrow over this world’s state or our life’s circumstances, then pray to God to have your joy restored, just like the Apostle Paul prayed, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13).  When we’re filled with the joy of the Lord, there’s no room for sorrow.

Count it all Joy  – James 1

If we count our blessings, one by one, we’d realize that we have every reason to have joy.  God has chosen us and saved us through Jesus Christ, so when trials overwhelm you, make a choice and “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kind” (James 1:2).  It’s all in how we look at it.  Count your blessings and you can count it all joy!

Inexpressible Joy – 1 Peter 1

People have asked me how I can love a God that I have never seen.   I tell them that my joy is not dependent upon what I see but Who the Lord Jesus Christ is.  Even though I’ve never seen Him, I know He exists and that He is coming someday for me (and you).  The Apostle Peter said, “Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory” (1 Peter 1:8).

Fullness of Joy – Psalm 16

How full is your cup of joy?  Is it half empty or half full?  It depends upon how you look at it.  The psalmist knew that true and lasting joy only comes from God, writing, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11).  Fill up your cup of joy by remembering all of the blessings of God, and that only in His presence is there “fullness of joy.”
