5 Stories From The Bible About Being Alone

Here are 5 stories from the Bible about being alone.

Not Good Being Alone

In the beginning, God saw that man needed someone as it was not good for him to be alone, and the same could be said of women, so the “Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him” (Genesis 2:18).  A helper is not condescending, but rather God saying that the man and woman will complement one another, enhancing one another in many ways, and speaking from experience, I agree with God that “It is not good that the man should be alone,” and neither is it for women.

Near the Brokenhearted

Whenever you feel alone and crushed, and feel like God is far, far away, remember the truth of Scripture.  God’s Word says just the opposite of what you feel, saying that “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).  We might feel God is far away, but our feelings are highly overrated and cannot compare with the objective truth of God’s Word.   Our feelings are subjective and can lie to us, but the fact is, He is near you when you’re broken; close to you when you’re crushed; no matter what your feelings tell you.

Two Better Than One

Just about everything in life takes cooperation, so it’s true that “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).  Even with a ministry, I can honestly tell you that I could not do half of what I do without my beloved wife, since she lifts me up when I’m down; she helps me up when I fall, and together, we are “better than one” and we can accomplish more for the Lord together than we can alone.

Continually with You

The psalmist wrote of God, “Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand” (Psalm 73:23).  He wrote, “Nevertheless” because it may not have looked like God was with Him, but in all things, he knew that God is working things out for his very best (Romans 8:28).  His unseen hand is holding ours, and just not occasionally, but He is “continually with you.”

Never Forsaken

There seems to be a connection between loving money and not being contented, as the author of Hebrews wrote, “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).  The reference to never leaving us certainly means He will not forsake us or abandon us in our times of need, financial or otherwise.

If you are single or divorced, I can’t imagine how hard that is and the times of loneliness, but in reality, God is with you, and more so; He is in you, if you’ve trusted in Christ, so in a sense, you will never really be alone.
