5 Stories From The Bible About Being Thankful

Here are 5 stories from the Bible about being thankful.

In All Circumstances

The Bible doesn’t tell us to be thankful only for the good things or when things are going well, but even when they’re not, and that’s quite often for Christians.  Regardless of our circumstances, we are told to “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).  Want to know what the will of God is?  Here it is!  It’s to give thanks to God for every circumstance that comes our way.

Give Thanks Always

We’ve already read that we’re to give thanks to God for all circumstances, so now we’re told to be “Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20).  We give thanks in all circumstances, but how often?  We are to always be “giving thanks always and for everything,” but importantly, we do this “to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  That’s why we’re told to pray in His name (Matthew 18:19, 22:22; Mark 11:25; John 14:13).

Thankful for Blessings

When I thank someone, I am generally specific in my thanks.  For example, I told my wife thank you for passing out the hymnals at our nursing home church services, so I believe we should be thankful to other people, and tell them so and be specific, but above all, we should “give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever” (Psalm 107:1).  It is to God that our highest gratitude belongs, and only afterwards, others.

Commit it to Prayer

It’s so easy to be worried or anxious about the things of tomorrow, but that’s a big waste of time and energy, because most of the time, we can’t do anything about tomorrow.  At least not until it gets here.  The thing for us to do is “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).  If there’s anything you’re worrying about, make it “known to God,” and then you’ve not only done all you can, you’ve done the most you can!

Entering His Courts

When we enter into corporate worship, which today is more important than ever before (Hebrews 10:24-25), we should “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name” (Psalm 110:4)!  Part of our worship is giving thanks to God for all of His marvelous blessings, not the least of which is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  The word “worship” means to give worth or to be worthy of praise, and isn’t our God worthy?  Indeed He is.

We should be the most thankful people on the planet, and why not?  We have received the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21); we have been saved from the wrath of God and granted eternal life (John 3:16); and God has promised to never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5), so thank God today for these many blessings.
