5 Stories From The Bible About Freedom

Here are 5 short stories from the Bible about freedom.

Freed from the Penalty

Before we were saved, we were slaves of sin (Romans 6:15-21), but when Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law, we were set free from the penalty and misery of sin, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1). Once freed, we should not desire to “submit again to a yoke of slavery.”  It was not fun as I remember, but the freedom we were given through Christ sets us free from living a life of sin and gives us joy like no other.

Set Free by the Truth

Until we knew the truth, we were held in bondage to sin, but Jesus provided us a way out, saying, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32).  We can’t be set free from sin until we’re set free by the truth, and Jesus is the truth (John 14:6), so we must abide in Christ and in His Word to know the truth.  There is no other way to be set free from sin except through Christ.

Proper Use of our Freedom

When we’re freed from sin and sin’s penalty, we can’t use this freedom in Christ to continue to live in sin, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13).  Our freedom was purchased by the blood of the Lamb of God, so how can we trample on that grace by still living in sin?  The fact is, we cannot…and should not.

Living Free

There are no words to describe being freed from the slavery that sin had us in.  The chains are broken by Jesus’ redemptive work, so the Apostle Peter admonishes us to “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God” (1 Peter 2:16).  It’s so easy to use our liberty or freedom in Christ as a cover-up to sin.  That’s not God’s desire and it shouldn’t be ours either.

Knowing the Truth

Until we discover the truth, and that truth is found in the Person of Jesus Christ, we cannot be set free, but thankfully, the Father has drawn us to Himself through Christ (John 6:44) and now we know the truth, so “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).  We can’t free ourselves…it takes a sovereign act of God.
