Devotional: Jesus said we’re the light of the world but is it turned on?
Jesus said we’re the light of the world but is it turned on? Here’s how to make sure the switch is flipped!
The Light of the World
Jesus tells believers that “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matt 5:14) but no one in their right mind would put a lamp under a bowl (Matt 5:15) but that is sometimes what believers do. We must be sure to put in out on the table for everyone to see. In this way you can “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matt 5:16). Our light is not to boast about ourselves but it is so that others will see our good works and that God will be glorified because we would do no good works at all unless God’s Spirit lived in us. Even our good works are not about us for even these has “God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Eph 2:10b). So Who deserves the glory and credit? Certainly God and Him alone and that’s the only reason we have any light in us in the first place.
The True Source of All Light
Did you notice that you can walk into a store and buy a flashlight but never a flashdark? That’s because only light overcomes the dark and Jesus is the True Source of Light at we read in John 1:4-5 “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Light always overcomes darkness but darkness cannot overcome light. Jesus declared “I am the light of the world” (John 9:5). That’s the believer’s source of light. Jesus said that we are the light of the world but we are not the source of that light…He is!
Flip the Switch
Since we are the light of the world and we abide in a dark world, we’re going to stand out. The temptation is to dim the light so that it doesn’t hurt the eyes of the unbelievers but we must never do that however so have, I am sure, so they need to flip the switch and let that light shine into the darkness which cannot overcome it. Let those who are in darkness see the light source that is Christ shining out from us and maybe like moths, they’ll be attracted to it and find the True Source of Light and the only source for life.
We are the light of the world but a light is useless unless it’s seen. Otherwise, if we hide it, no one can see our good works and glorify God. We must flip the switch to allow others to see the light of hope that is in us and that hope is Jesus Christ for He is the Light of the World and there is life in no other name (Acts 4:12).
