5 Things That Cannot Separate Us From God

“Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God.”

– Romans 8:39

Neither Life nor Death

The 8th chapter of Romans is one of the most precious chapters in the Bible because it gives the believer great assurance that they cannot be separated from God in this life or after death. In fact, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2nd Cor 5:8), so neither life nor death can ever separate the child of God from God Himself.

Angels or Rulers

There is also no separation possible by angels or rulers, and in this case, it may be fallen angels, because no holy angel from God would ever try to separate a child of God from God, so this must refer to fallen angels or demons. Also, there is no world ruler or power that can keep us from being with God. That’s why Paul includes the truth that neither angels nor rulers can ever keep us from being with God someday.

The Present or Things to Come

What has happened in the past cannot determine our future and even more so, nothing that is to come in the future can separate us from God. This means that whatever has happened in our past or whatever will happen in the future, it is not possible that these past and future events can keep us from being with God someday.

No Height

There is also no height so great that can separate us from the love of God and from being in His presence. This could mean any mountain that stands before us and or any wall that seems impossible to scale can keep us from our God. It doesn’t matter how high the wall or how big the mountain is in our life; there is no height in all the universe that can keep us from our good God.

No Depth

When we bury people, usually six feet under, there is still no separating them from God if they have trusted in Christ. This could mean no earthy grave, no watery grave, or anything that plunges us into the depths, so no depth is deep enough to keep us from God because God is there, no matter where we go. The psalmist understood that even “If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there” (Psalm 139:8).

Conclusion

If you are troubled by a lack of assurance in your salvation, I urge you to turn to the Book of Romans and camp out in chapter 8. This chapter gives us an amazing reminder and promise that “Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God” (Rom 8:39).
