“Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

– Colossians 3:12

Compassion

The Apostle Paul describes these godly attributes as something that you can put on. Elsewhere he wrote “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom 13:14), as if you could wear Him like clothing for everyone to see. I believe that’s what he had in mind. If you’re clothed with compassion, this means people will be able to see it on you.

Kindness

Kindness is not so easy to see, because much of our ministry to people is when no one else is looking, but kindness will not be forgotten by God. Doing random acts of kindness is so easy to do; say thank you, hold the door open for someone, hold the elevator, or just whatever else you can think of. You’ve got the idea.

Humility

The meek, humble, and lowly don’t get very far in this world, but in God’s kingdom, they will be exalted (Matt 23:12). And who cares how far we get in this world; this isn’t our home anyway. When people see humility, they notice. That’s because it’s a very rare thing these days. Maybe that humility will open the door someday for you to share the gospel with someone.

Gentleness

I really believe gentleness is a strength, and not being gentle is a weakness. At least that’s the way I think God would look at it. Displaying compassion, kindness, and humility, is great, but without gentleness, it seems to be less genuine.  Having these attributes are fine, but gentleness gives them more meaning.

Patience

Patience can be revealed in a person’s gentle nature, in the way they humble themselves, by the kindness they show to people, and in the compassion extended to others. It would be difficult to be gentle, humble, kind, and compassionate if you’re not very patient.

Conclusion

I believe that these are evidences of a person that knows Christ. Jesus said “You will know them by their fruits,” (Matt 7:16), and I don’t want to settle for wax fruit. I want the real thing, but I must let the Holy Spirit have His way in my life. Only then, can I be compassionate, kind, humble, gentle, and patient.
