For Christ
The Apostle Paul expressed a great desire “that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death” (Phil 3:10), so Paul could honestly say, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ” (Phil 3:8).
For Others
Jesus puts the priority straight for us by saying, “The greatest among you shall be your servant” (Matt 23:11), but the world says, “Wait Jesus! Isn’t the one with the most servants the greatest?” No, Jesus says the greatest is not the one who has the most servants but the one who serves the most. The number of people served is the mark of greatness, because “the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matt 20:28). That’s why He made us (Eph 2:10).
For His Glory
Jesus always strived to glorify the Father and the Father always seeks to glorify the Son, so guess what we should be doing? You know. We must live lives that glorify God in our bodies, which mean what we watch, what we say, what we do, and what we think must glorify Him. It is all about Him. The late Dr. J. Vernon McGee once said that the Bible is a “Him-book.” It’s all about Him…and about His glory.
Conclusion
Mother Teresa lived her life for others, much like a drink offering being poured out before God. Is that something we think about when we live our lives? We must live lives that point to Jesus Christ. We are like the moon. We might seem to have some beautiful or merit to our lives, but that is only because of God’s Spirit illuminates us. Guess what? The moon doesn’t have a dark side…it is all dark, and the only reason we see it is because the sun shines on it, so any good we do is only a reflection of God and we must give glory to God for all things, because He will not share it with another (Isaiah 42:8; 48:11).
