3 Reasons He Is The Lily Of The Valley

“I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.”

– Song of Solomon 2:1

Like a Rose

Our church has an old hymn that talks about Jesus Christ being the Rose of Sharon and that He was like a rose crushed for our sakes, but when a rose is crushed, it puts out a beautiful fragrance and this chapter has been stated to be about the relationship between Christ and His church, the Bride, so the Book of Song of Solomon seems to reflect upon this most beautiful of relationships, where “He was crushed for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5a).

In the Valley

I believe every Christian has had their walk in the valley and perhaps a valley that was a shadow of death (Psalm 23:4), but even in the valley, the psalmist reassures us that we are not to “fear no evil, for You are with me” (Psalm 23:b), so even though the shadow of death may be overshadowing us, there is nothing that can separate us from God (Rom 8:35), not even death (Rom 8:38-39).

A Rose and a Lily

Jesus Christ has been described as the Lily of the Valley and the Rose of Sharon, but He is indeed both and so much more. The sweet savor of Jesus’ supreme sacrifice was pleasing to God and was accepted by the Father for our sakes (Isaiah 53:6)…otherwise, we’d all be crushed roses and lily’s but to never recover again.

Conclusion

Jesus Christ is the sweetest name there is because even though we rightly deserved the wrath of God, Jesus took it upon Himself so that we might be spared the deserved wrath of God. That makes Jesus’ the name above all names and for this reason and more, He deserves all the glory and none to us.
