5 Stories From The Bible About Peace And Comfort

Here are 5 stories from the Bible about having peace and comfort.

Comforted from Fear

David knew times of fear…fears from the enemy, and from evil King Saul who pursued him for years, and yet David knew that “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).  A shadow of death and the reality of death are not the same thing.  For example, I’d rather get hit but the shadow of a bus than an actual bus, but God will comfort us even in places of shadowy death.

Jesus’ Peace

I can have peace about things. The world can be at peace for a time, but neither of these last because their origin is human, but Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27).  If we have the peace that Jesus gives, we won’t be troubled by the things around us and we won’t be afraid of the evil around us.

God of All Comfort

God comforts us.  How?  He uses others as a means to comfort us, so we ought to comfort others the way they’ve comforted us when we needed it.  The Apostle Paul says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

Peace in Him

There is not a lot of peace in the world….but there is a lot of tribulation.  Jesus knew the disciples would face tribulation, especially after He returned to the Father, so He told them, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).  The lesson for us is we can’t find peace in this world.  We won’t find lasting peace in our friends, our job, our family, or in our possessions.  Jesus is the only source of true and lasting peace.

Comforted by Love

As a father and grandfather, I know what it’s like giving comfort to children, but we ought to remember God’s steadfast and comforting love for us.  The psalmist wrote, “Let your steadfast love comfort me according to your promise to your servant” (Psalm 119:76).  I notice it say “Let your steadfast love comfort me,” meaning we have to allow God’s love to comfort us.

The only real peace and comfort in this life is not found in the world.  Rather, Isaiah the Prophet says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3). If our minds are stayed on Him and fully trust in Him, you too can have peace and comfort.
