5 Stories From The Bible From The Gospel Of Matthew

Here are 5 stories from the Bible from the Gospel of Matthew.

Immanuel

After Joseph discovered Mary was with child, he decidedly to secretly or quietly divorce her, but an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (Matthew 1:23).  Immanuel means “God with us” and Jesus being God would be with us…and with the first disciples.  And Immanuel would come to save God’s people from their sins.

The Temptation

We’ve all been tempted to sin…sometimes being led away by our own lusts, but at other times, tempted by the Tempter, so when Jesus faced Satan directly, He was tempted like no one had ever been tempted before.  Jesus was able to resist Satan’s temptation and not sin, and He rebuked the Devil by quoting Scripture, saying, “It is written” three times (Matthew 4:4-10).  That’s what we need to do when tempted…recall Scripture from memory where “It is written” so that we might not sin.

The Beatitudes

One of Jesus’ greatest teachings was the Sermon on the Mount or the Beatitudes.  Here is where Jesus  “opened his mouth and taught them” (Matthew 5:2) many things; like being blessed by being poor or humble in spirit; those who mourn; those who are meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness; and those who are merciful, pure in heart, and are peacemakers (Matthew 5:3-9).  There’s even a blessing for those who are persecuted for Jesus’ sake (Matthew 5:10-12).

The Lord’s Prayer

The disciples saw that Jesus was a Man of prayer and they wanted to know how to pray like Jesus did, so Jesus told them to “ Pray then like this” (Matthew 6:9a).  First of all, they were told to pray for the Father’s name to be hallowed or revered, and to pray for God’s will, as well as His kingdom to come (Matthew 6:9b-10), but this prayer was never intended to be repeated.  They (and we) are only told to “Pray like this” or in this manner…as a pattern for us to pray.

The Great Commission

In Matthew 28, Jesus gave final orders for the disciples that they are to go “and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19), and to be “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded” them (Matthew 28:20a).  That’s an imperative command given by our Chief Commander or Lord, Jesus Christ. It’s not a suggestion but a command.  We may not be able to go into all the world, but we can at least go to our neighbors, friends, co-workers, and family.
