5 Stories From The Bible About Spiritual Warfare

Here are 5 stories from the Bible about the Christian and the spiritual warfare they face every day.

An Invisible Enemy

It’s hard enough being in a battle when you can see your enemy, but try fighting one you can’t see, but that’s just what Christians face, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

Divine Power

Since we fight an enemy that’s too much for us, we need God’s divine power to fight with, “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.  For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy stronghold” (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). Without the armor of God (Ephesians 6) and His power, we’d be no match for the enemy.

Victory in Submission

Only in Christianity is there victory in submission…submitting ourselves to God.  When we submit to God, we can resist the devil, so “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).  Who does the fleeing?  It is the Devil and not we!  He cannot stand to be around someone who submits to God.

Watch for the Adversary

You won’t live long in the jungle if you’re not watching for wild animals, but Satan’s even more sinister and cunning than wild beasts, so we must be “sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).  Submit to God and he’ll have to prowl elsewhere…but watch.  He comes in many forms like pride, lust, greed, and a thirst for violence.

The Armor of God

An army without armor wouldn’t last very long in a war, but Christians can go into their spiritual battle with no armor on at all.  That’s why the Apostle Paul says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11).  Notice it’s not in the passive form, but rather, we must take action and “put on” the armor.  He won’t put it on for us.
