5 Stories From The Bible For Bosses And Supervisors

Here are 5 stories from the Bible that bosses and supervisors should read and consider.

A Laborer’s Wage

James must have seen enough laborers taken advantage of in his day that he could truthfully write, “Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts” (James 5:4).  If an employee is not paid a fair wage, the employer is actually robbing the laborer.  God will not forget this because their fraud and greed will someday be “crying out against” them of the Day of Judgment.

Under Authority

Even a boss or supervisor has someone over them, and even the company president and owner has a master.  We are all under submission to someone, but ultimately, we’re responsible before God.  The Apostle Paul told “Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him” (Ephesians 6:9).  The Lord will require of us who have authority to have used it for good.

The Greatest

The disciples had been debating about who would be the greatest in the coming kingdom, but Jesus rebuked them.  They really didn’t understand that it’s not so much about how many serve them, but how many they serve.  The Lord said, “It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26).  A good supervisor or boss is more than just their superior; he or she should be a servant to their fellow employees, and should be.

Responsibility

If you’re a boss or supervisor or even a plant manager, you have to remember that whatever state you have in life was the will of God Himself.  Jesus told Pontius Pilate that “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin” (John 19:11).  Where a person has more responsibility, they will be more responsible before God.  That even includes Pontius Pilate.

Governing Authorities

Wherever you work, someone is responsible for the company obeying the legal authorities.  Even the CEO of a company must submit to state and federal tax laws and laws regarding their employees.  The Apostle Paul reminded the church at Rome to “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God” (Romans 12:1).  Even if you dislike your boss, they are placed there by the sovereign hand of God.
