A Future Hope

God hates divorce, but He loves divorced people.  This is not the unpardonable sin.  God still has plans for you if you’ve had a divorce.  God is a forgiving God.  Let this verse be almost like God speaking to you in your hurt, telling you, “I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).  Use this divorce as a comma, not a period.  You have a hope and a future in Jesus Christ, regardless of your past.

Our Iniquities

Aren’t we glad that God doesn’t deal with us according to how many sins we’ve committed and how bad some of them have been?  Praise God for His marvelous mercy as “He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:10). If we had been repaid “according to our iniquities,” who could stand?  None of us, but the Lord is a forgiving God, not giving us what we deserve (wrath) but what we need (mercy).

His Righteousness

If we are to enter heaven, we must be declared just as righteous as God, but what about those who’ve been through a divorce?  The Bible is clear that it was “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).  If we’ve trusted in Jesus Christ, then we’ve received His righteousness, divorced or not.  God cannot see our sins through Jesus’ righteousness.

Confession

Confessing our sins to God is good for the soul.  It lightens our burden and refreshes the spirit, so how joyous is it for us to read the Apostle John’s telling us that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9)?  The Greek word for “all” as in God forgiving us of all our unrighteousness means “all!”  That’s past, present, and future.

Nearer to God

If you’ve been through a wrecked marriage that ended up in a divorce, it’s not the end of the world my friend.  God still has plans for you.  If you’re feeling far from God right now from this crushing experience, you’re actually closer to God than you think.  The Psalmist wrote, “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).  Feeling crushed by a ruined relationship?  You’re close to God and you can be sure He will save you of those who are “crushed in spirit.”
