The Lord’s Building – Psalm 127

Wise King Solomon wrote, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain” (Psalm 127:1), so unless the Word of God is foundational to your home, it’s just a house.  We can build a family, but it will be in vain unless it is the Lord Himself that builds it.

Happy Wife, Happy Home – Deuteronomy 24

Some of the laws of the Old Testament were great blessings in disguise.  For example, God always made sure the poor and widows were taken care of, but even the newlywed husband was considered by God.  The law said, “When a man is newly married, he shall not go out with the army or be liable for any other public duty. He shall be free at home one year to be happy with his wife whom he has taken” (Deuteronomy 24:5). What a good and merciful God He is!

Serving the Lord – Romans 6

Before we were saved, we were slaves of sins (Romans 6:20, but the truth set us free; the truth that salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone (Acts 4:12).  Once a person is saved, they become a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and they willing serve the Lord.  When Israel was settling into their new homes, Joshua reminded them that “as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15).  What a great quote to put up in your home.

In our home, we have several places where Scriptures are quoted, and this is biblical because ancient Israel was told to “write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:9).  When the Word of God is found in the home, the Word of God Himself can abide (John 1).  The more daily reminders of God and His Word you see, the more you take God’s Word with you.  Getting into the Word of God, gets the Word of God into you.

Dwelling in Unity – Psalm 113

How great it is to have a family that dwells in unity or a family that lives unified in the faith.  That might be the exception in households today, but “how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity” (Psalm 113:1).  The Holy Spirit can be that “threefold cord” that binds the family together, so even “though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12).
