Here are 5 stories from the Bible about Christmas.
A Son is Given
Isaiah the Prophet wrote, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). There is no clearer picture of the Lord Jesus Christ’s coming birth in Bethlehem than this verse, but this was written a thousand years before Jesus’ birth of a virgin. Obviously, God’s sovereignty ensured that it would come to pass, and it did, and at the exact moment in time and history.
The Word Became Flesh
When Jesus was born by the virgin Mary, it was a time when “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). The Apostle John was not an eye-witness to Jesus’ birth, but He was an eye-witness to His glory, knowing He was the one and only Son of God, sent from the Father, and He alone of all men was “full of grace and truth.”
The Birth of the Lord
Luke the Physician, being a doctor and given to precise detail and historical accuracy, wrote that “the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:18). That means, Jesus was not conceived through a human father, thus avoiding the adamic sin nature of man, but rather, Jesus’ was conceived by the Spirit of God and had no sin nature.
Born to be King
When the wise men or magi came from the East to find Jesus, they found Him, and “going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11). These gifts were fit for a king, and Jesus was born to be a king, just as He told Pontius Pilate (John 18:36-37).
Call Him Jesus
When the angel of God appeared to Joseph in a dream (Matthew 1:20), the angel said of Mary, “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sin” (Matthew 1:21), and that is exactly what He did and why He is called Jesus. His name means “to save” or “to deliver,” and He has delivered His people from their sins and will bring them safely over into the coming Promised Land, the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:1-2).
When you think of Jesus’ birth, you think of a babe born in a stable or cave where animals were kept, much like a barn where animals were kept. Jesus was born in very humble circumstances and came as a Lamb of God, meek and mild, but someday, He will come as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah.
