5 Stories From The Bible About Body Image

Here are 5 stories from the Bible about people’s body images.

Wonderfully Made

Many people body shame others, but that’s sin to God and it hurts others.  The Word of God tells us that each of us are made in a very special way, and there are no two like us anywhere, so we should praise God as the psalmist who wrote, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well” (Psalm 139:14)!   That means, you are unique and made just the way God intended.  Why?  I don’t know, but I do know the Potter knows what He’s doing.

Seeing the Heart

It’s in our nature to look at people and pick out their flaws.  They might be overweight, old and wrinkled, have scars, be short, tall, bald, or wide, “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). The Lord says to us too…don’t look at the outward appearance, because the more important inward person is what is most important to God.

The Temple of God

Can you imagine someone committing sexual immorality inside the temple of God?  But that’s just what some do who are involved in sexual activity with someone who is not their spouse.   Don’t you remember that “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

The Hidden Person

We might think we know someone really well, but only God and that person know what’s inside.  The Apostle Peter said, “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious” (1 Peter 3:3-4).  What is more beautiful to God?  It’s not the outward appearance, which we tend to value more, but a gentle and quiet spirit is very precious in God’s sight.

Fearing God

Our spring flowers are so beautiful, but they quickly wilt when the summer winds come.  They are glorious for a time, but then their glory fades.  We can appreciate and value beauty, but even that will pass away someday.  Solomon wrote, “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).  What is inside will live on beyond what is on the outside.

Whatever you think of your own body, you were created in the image of God, whether male or female.  Besides, we’ve got a new body coming and one that will overshadow this body in ways we can’t even imagine.
