– 1 Samuel 2:2
The Immovable Rock
The Bible describes God as a Rock, meaning He is immovable by any means. We can’t change God or make God do something against His will. Samuel the Prophet said, “There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God” (1st Sam 2:2). The Apostle Paul, in writing about Israel’s wilderness experience, wrote that Israel “drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ” (1st Cor 10:4).
God is Spirit
God is not like us at all. He might be described to have ears to hear our prayers, but God is actually spirit and does not have a physical body. Jesus tells us that we must worship God is spirit and in truth (John 4:24). This means our worship services should be held as sacred assemblies and people should show respect and reverence for God and His Word as it is taught and read, so we must worship Him in both spirit and in truth. God will not accept worship that does not have both.
None Other
You can’t compare God with anything or anyone. You can’t say “God is like…” because you will leave out too many of His attributes. God is not like we think He is. We do know some things about God, but truly, we’ve only been given a fraction of all there is to know about God.
Has Always Been
Jesus, in proclaiming Himself as the Alpha and Omega (Rev 1:8, 21:6, 22:13), is really saying, “I am A to Z and everything in between.” He has no beginning and has no ending. He has always existed, but God’s eternality is something I just can’t wrap my mind around. Try to draw a line back into time, and you won’t ever find a point where God does not exist.
He is Holy
The only attribute of God that is mentioned three times is that He is holy, holy, holy. That’s the highest emphasis you can put on something in Jewish literature. Isaiah the Prophet sees a vision of God and fall, as if a dead man, and hears the angels proclaim, “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory” (Isaiah 6:3)! No one else anywhere is holy like God, not to mention like any other being.
Conclusion
God is unique in that He is the immovable Rock, He is Spirit, He is like none other, He is, has been, and will always be, and He is above all, holy, holy, holy. That is enough to know that there is none like God and there is no God like our God.
