The Word Becomes Flesh
The Apostle John wrote of Jesus that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Jesus could have come down as God in Spirit, but we would not have had the God-Man, Jesus Christ come to live a holy life and die as the perfect sacrifice for our sins.
To Make the Children of God
I hope we don’t have the false idea that we came to faith on our own or it was our own idea. The Bible actually says “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13). See that? It was by the will of God that we were born again, because dead corpses cannot resurrect themselves (Eph 2:1).
A Ransom for Us
Jesus said that “the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Today we are serving God through His commands (Matt 25:34-40, 28:18-20; James 1:27) but not out of obligation but out of love and thankfulness and gratitude. We have our marching orders, now we must “Go!”
Conclusion
Jesus came to die for us who didn’t deserve it (Rom 5:6-10), and to make men and women holy who would trust in Him, but also to make the children of God who would be born into His kingdom, and to make that possible, give His life as a ransom for us who couldn’t pay for our own sins.
