4 Reasons To Live Humbly Before God And Others

“He sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.”

– Job 5:11

He Regards the Humble

If anyone wants to be near God, they must empty themselves of pride because God is resistant to the proud and only gives His grace to the humble (James 4:6). God has more regard for the lowly or humble than He does a million men or women of fame. Feeling low? If so, God will set you on high, even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time.

He Comforts the Brokenhearted

The psalmist tells us “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). Are you feeling brokenhearted? Have you had your hopes crushed? Does your life feel like it’s been shattered into a million pieces? Guess what? God is near you and saves those who are “crushed in spirit.” I hope that gives you comfort and hope.

He Exalts the Lowly

Job declared that God “sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety,” but why did Job use the word “safety?” Perhaps those who God “sets on high” are safer than those whom don’t regard themselves as the lowly. If they are not humble, they’re in danger of being humbled by God. If a person exalts themselves, God will debase them, but the person who humbly submits to God and bows down the heart in humility, that same person will be exalted by God.

Wipes the Tears Away

God is the God of all comfort (2nd Cor 1:3-5), meaning that He can comfort us in all circumstances. When we have great grief, we have a God that is greater than our grief. When we are overwhelmed by life, we have a God that can sympathize, as Jesus is our Mediator and High Priest, familiar with our pains, sorrows, and afflictions. Someday, that last tear we shed will be wiped away – forever – by God Himself (Rev 21:4). How awesome that will be.

Conclusion

If you feel like the low end of a totem pole, then God’s going to exalt you, but for those who fight their way to the top to be exalted, God’s going to lower them. The humble will be exalted but the exalted will be humbled. It’s best to get this in the right order today, isn’t it? And I am speaking to myself too!
