5 Stories From The Bible About Aging

Here are 5 stories from the Bible that relate to aging.

Day by Day

Many years take their toll.  It gets harder and harder to do things that used to be relatively easy.  Our bodies wear out, but the Apostle Paul doesn’t want us to lose heart over this.  He says, “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16).  It’s the “inner self” that’s going into eternity anyway.  It’s what’s inside that really counts in the end.

Even to Old Age

God does not forsake the old and aged when they are no longer productive members of society.  Through no fault of their own, the aged often become disabled and are no longer able to do what they used to do, but God’s love doesn’t waver over the decades.  The psalmist wrote, “So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come” (Psalm 71:18).

The Gray Hair

Studies have shown that stress can cause our hair to turn gray, and I believe it, but another reason is it’s just the natural process of human aging.  When we get older, we start having changes in our bodies…and not good ones, but the Word of God sees the value in the aged.  Solomon wrote, “The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair” (Proverbs 20:29).

Never Forsakes Us

Many in the nursing homes I speak with feel that God’s forsaken them and left them in their old age.  They no longer feel useful to God, but I remind them that they can pray and prayer is critical. We can’t do much of anything without praying about everything.  The psalmist might have been anxious about this as he wrote, “Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent” (Psalm 71:9), but deep in his heart, he must have known that God would never leave him or forsake him (Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1: Hebrews 13:5).

Rise in Respect

I was taught to rise from your chair when a lady entered the room or an elderly person came in.  That’s how we show respect to women and to the aged.  In fact, that’s an Old Testament Law.  Scripture say, “You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:32).  To not do so angers God because His will is for us to treat others with dignity and respect and rise before the “face of an old man” or woman.

The Book of Job is considered part of the wisdom literature of the Bible, and we can see that where it’s said that “Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days” (Job 12:12). When I was young, I thought I knew it all…but only later, as an elder, I see that I’ve got much to learn and that “Wisdom is with the aged” and not the young.
