5 Stories From The Bible About Appreciating Someone

Here are 5 stories from the Bible about appreciating someone.

Good Words

The words we speak to others can do one of two things; they can be words that can help, and they can be words that can hurt.  If what we say is not helpful, even if it’s true, why would we want to say it?  The Apostle Paul admonishes us to “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29). Some of that talk includes telling someone “Thank you,” and that you appreciate them.

Building Up

Words can tear down, or words can build up.  What we do with our words is up to us, but once released, our words cannot be taken back, “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).  The church at Thessalonica was already building up the members of the body by their words, and the result would be a church that is more encouraging to the world.

Peace to You

In this psalm, it’s as if the psalmist made peace with his enemies for the sake of family and friends.  He wrote that it was “For my brothers and companions’ sake I will say, “Peace be within you” (Psalm 122:8)!  It might not have been what he felt about his enemies, but for the sake of others, he said “Peace be within you.”  We don’t give our enemies what they deserve; we give them what they need, and that’s love and mercy, as God has for us (Romans 5:6-10).

Think of These Things

If we’re in the Bible on a daily basis, we’re naturally going to be thinking more thoughts about God, and if we’re thinking more thoughts about God, we’re thinking more thoughts about good things.  The Apostle Paul told the church at Philippi to think on these things, writing, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (Philippians 4:8).

Believes the Best

Some things life in are unbearable.  Things like grieving over the loss of a loved one, a beloved pet, or even the loss of a relationship, but the truest of love; a godly love, is able to “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:7).  That means love gives people the benefit of the doubt; love believes the best in people; and love bears up when others might become unbearable.

If we tell someone thank you, tell them you appreciate them, or just try to encourage or build them up, you’ve done a lot more than the world does for them.  The world dwells on negative things; on scandalous things; things that are bad.  Things like pain, suffering, natural disasters, death, and diseases.  If there was no bad in the world, there’d probably be no nightly news reports, so let us be those who are of “good report.”
