5 Stories From The Bible About Adoption

Here are 5 stories from the Bible that relate to our adoption.

Our Father

Do you know anyone who’s been adopted?  If so, I am sure they’re glad, at least most of the ones I know are.  Now imagine being adopted by God!  Yes, we who have trusted in Christ have been adopted by God the Father as “He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will” (Ephesians 1:5). Notice an important point; it is only “through Jesus Christ,” for there is no other way to become a member of the family of God (Acts 4:12).

Our Daddy

The Apostle Paul tells us that Jesus came “To redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God” (Galatians 4:5-7).  Abba is basically, “Daddy,” and that’s the intimate relationship we can have with God through Christ.

Abraham’s Children

The Jews of Jesus’ day thought that they had an automatic right into the kingdom, just because they were Abraham’s children, but no one goes to heaven on someone else’s coattails. The Apostle Paul said, “This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring” (Romans 9:8).  It is not ever about race; it is always about grace!

Children of God

Jesus came to be born in the flesh to save that which was still in the flesh (us!), so it is, “to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).  God gave us that right by our believing in His name, Jesus Christ.  We have no other right to be called the children of God unless we have believed in the Son of God, so do you believe?  Have you repented and trusted in Him.  If not, you are not yet a child of God.

God Loves His Children

Want tangible evidence of God’s love?  Look to the cross, because if you do, you will “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him” (1 John 3:1).  John says we are the children of God in the present tense.  He’s not referring to some future time in heaven.  Today we are God’s children and that explains why the world hates us.  Because they don’t know the Father, so they won’t tolerate us.

Many in the prisons have never known their father or their father abandoned them when they were young, so their idea of a father is different than what the Bible teaches about a father.  For the best view of God the Father, read the Gospel of John.  See why we should rejoice at being adopted…and right now, being a child of God.
