5 Things to Make Others Feel Great

“The really great man is the man who makes every man feel great.”

– G.K. Chesterton

Thank You

Two small words that can make a world of difference are “thank you.” How easy that is to say, yet so few say it. Even worse, many Christians fail to give thanks, even though we are commanded to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and to be “giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20). You can make someone’s day better by simply saying thank you.

My Compliments

How about complimenting someone for a job well done or telling them they’re doing a great job? That can really make a person’s day go better because someone finally notices what they are doing. It seems that we are hesitant to give thanks to people but also to compliment them sincerely for whatever it is they’re doing. So why not do that today?

Smile

Smiling is almost what I consider contagious. If you smile at someone, they may smile back at you; even if they don’t, at least you are. You cannot control how others respond, but you can help brighten their day by showing them a smile, and that smile might spread around the place where they are.

Serving

We are commanded to serve one another, but this applies outside the church, too. James wrote, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” (James 1:27). Christianity is not about being religious; it’s about love and serving one another inside and outside the church.

The Unexpected

I remember hearing about a pastor who was in the checkout lane at a grocery store. Apparently, a single mother ahead of him, with three children in her care, was frantically searching for spare change to be able to pay her total. She was in tears because she knew she was holding up the line and embarrassed because she didn’t have enough money, so the pastor gave the cashier a twenty-dollar bill. The woman then cried out of gratitude.

Conclusion

We can make others feel great by very simple things like saying thank you, complimenting them, smiling at them, serving those inside and outside the church, and doing the unexpected. The really great man or woman is the man or woman who can truly make everyone feel great.
