4 Ways To Be Available To God

“You do not have to be special, but you have to be available.”

– Winkie Pratney

Be Faithful

If we’re not faithful, that means we’re probably not available, so the first thing we need to consider is God can use us if we are faithful. Even at the day of Jesus’ return, He will say, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master” (Matt 25:21). He never said, “Well done, good and faithful servant for listening to 3,537 sermons, attending 494 Bible studies, and 2,723 Sunday school classes.” Don’t get me wrong. These things are good, but we must be faithful or God cannot use us in mighty ways.

Be Available

If you are faithful, that means you’re available, because faithful people make themselves available. It doesn’t take great skill or gift to serve God. It just takes someone that’s available and is willing to serve, but they must be available in order to do that. If they are faithfully available, then God will find a place in His work and in His Body, the church. Jesus is still Head of the Church, and each member is vital to its proper functioning, even if you don’t think you’re special.

Be Teachable

If we are faithful, and we’re available, then we should be teachable, because we’ll be around others enough to learn from them (as I have). I can’t count the number of Sunday school classes where I’ve learned from other members. Even those who think little of themselves can teach us things that we might overlook. God often uses those we’d never think of to teach us things we’ve never thought of.

Be Humble

It’s great to be faithful, available, and teachable, but if you or I are not humble, God can’t really use us very much. The Bible teaches that God is resistant to the proud and only gives His grace to the humble (James 4:6). Grace is a lot like water; it seeks the lowest levels, and those in a state of humility most often receive it because they are lowly in spirit and nature. Those are the kinds of people who God can really use in powerful ways.

Conclusion

If you desire to be used by God, then you must be faithfully present among the members of Christ; you must make yourself available in order for God to use you; you must remain teachable or this may show you’re not humble, and God will not use the proud of heart, but only those who esteem others as better than themselves.
